In this episode, we sit down with the owner of Siren Media, a marketing agency focused on small businesses. You can learn from how Alyssa started the company shortly after getting fired from her previous job. Listen to how she builds her network to create a successful business. We discuss both our marketing agency history and what struggles it took to get where we are today.

Key Takeaways About Networking and Business Ownership from Alyssa Weathers-Murphy

Alyssa began her early career working in sales. She began in retail, learning how to work with different metrics and standards for different brands on a traditional sales floor. She believes, “That set [her] up for corporate sales once [she] got to that point.”

After graduating college, she moved on to work in the media industry, where she described working a few jobs for a few months at a time and finding that agencies were not a good fit for her. Eventually, through her connections, she transitioned into media sales and worked in that industry for about 4 years.

When she was let go from her job, she said “There's a really powerful lesson in this story... And the lesson is always have alternatives… If you don’t have alternatives, then you’re out of luck, and beggars can’t be choosers.” She talks about how your options and alternatives are key to continuing to move forward.

Alyssa also speaks on the importance of networking, especially when she was making a name for herself and looking for jobs. She spoke about one of her jobs saying, “They really liked me because… I do have a network. I know people in Oklahoma City. I’ve spent all this time developing a very solid network and making sure I know who what and where.”

Both Yosuke and Alyssa manage marketing teams. Alyssa spoke about maintaining a good, well-running team. She mentioned the importance of allowing time for conversations that don’t pertain to work in order to maintain a good culture and connection within the team. Yosuke believes that it’s all about balance and awareness. Alyssa said, “If you can become a better culture-builder, if you can make a happier team, better life for yourself, your boss, your employees… it’s worth it.”
